The Milwaukee Bakery, Madison ca 1940

The Milwaukee Bakery at 214 S. Murray Street was operated by the Moskowsky family from 1924-1952. The extended family lived in the apartment above the bakery. Each day the bakers prepared fresh breads on the wood fired hearth for sale all across the city. In particular, residents from the Bush fondly remembered the sweet rolls and the traditional Sabbath kosher challah bread from the bakery. They also produced rye, Vienna, and pumpernickel breads, as well as bagels. A crusty French bread sold for a nickel a loaf. From 1952 until 1957 the Moskowsky family continued to live in the upstairs apartment, but the storefront was rented out to a delicatessen.
